7.3 Place, Pacing & Time

Notwithstanding the above precaution, ideally, conduct the interview in the work place where the person would spend most of her time.

I know many small businesses and OMO have cluttered work areas but I leave it to you about the kind of impression you, as an employer, want to create.

Do ensure there is a waiting area in case you are in the middle of an earlier interview. Preferably, keep the waiting area or the interview area closed off.

Do not seat them at a worktable where you might have confidential documents strewn about. Remember you would reject most of the candidates and some of those who turn up for interviews might be working for your competitors.

Space the interviews at one-hour intervals but plan the interviews to last about 45 minutes. For junior level appointments, this should be enough time.

I suggest the following sequence:

(i)

Spend the first 5 minutes on casual and peripheral issues like how long it took him to reach your office, offer him a glass of water and whether he had to take ½ day’s leave or time off, etc. This helps the candidate to relax. The idea is not to trap the person into an unfair position but to learn about him; how and whether he can contribute to your business.
